Características histológicas del ciclo reproductivo de Euvola ziczac (Linnaeu) (Pectinidae, Bivalvia) del litoral sur-sudeste del Brasil Zoologia
Borzone,Carlos Alberto; Pezzuto,Paulo Ricardo; Tavares,Yara Aparecida Garcia.
Scallops were collected from beds at 30 to 40 m depth on the south-southern inner continental shelf of Brazil for histological gonadal characterization of the reproductive cycle. This hermaphroditic scallop was an important shellfish resource during 70-80 decade, with maximal annual landings of 8,845 tons, but now is depleted. Results shows that reproduction is continuous, with two major spawning periods, the first during end of summer and throughout autumn, and the second during winter and beginning of spring. A characteristic phenomenon of oocyte atresia, with maximal incidences in September is described. This phenomenon, followed by the mature oocyte resorption and new oocyte proliferation and maturation, was related to the lack of spawning stimulation....

Development of culture techniques for new bivalve species ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Mercer, J. P..
Were are two main reasons for the development of cultivation techniques of new bivalve species. First, the risk exists that traditionally reared species may be ereadicated or severely depleted by pathogenic agents. For example the Portuguese 0yster Crassostrea angulata. disapeared from the French coasts in the early 1970's and worldwide production of the flat oyster, Oslrea edulis has been dramatically reduced by the effects of Bonamia. Secondly, in some countries production may he self-Iimiting by the size and availabilily of national and international markets and a wider species range could offer some promising new economic opportunities for aquaculturists. In particular this applies to species where there are identifiable market shortfalls.

Effect of reproduction on escape responses, metabolic rates and muscle mitochondrial properties in the scallop Placopecten magellanicus ArchiMer
Kraffe, E; Tremblay, R; Belvin, S; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Marty, Y; Guderley, H.
In scallops, gametogenesis and spawning can diminish the metabolic capacities of the adductor muscle and reduce escape response performance. To evaluate potential mechanisms underlying this compromise between reproductive investment and escape response, we examined the impact of reproductive stage (pre-spawned, spawned and reproductive quiescent) of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, on behavioural (i.e., escape responses), physiological (i.e., standard metabolic rates and metabolic rates after complete fatigue) and mitochondrial capacities (i.e., oxidative rates) and composition. Escape responses changed markedly with reproductive investment, with spawned scallops making fewer claps and having shorter responses than pre-spawned or...

First report on amnesic and diarrhetic toxins detection in French scallops during 2004-05 monitoring surveys ArchiMer
Amzil, Zouher; Royer, Florence; Sibat, Manoella; Fiant, Liliane; Gelin, Muriel; Le Gal, Dominique; Francoise, Sylvaine.
In the context of the French phytoplankton and phycotoxins monitoring network (REPHY), shellfish scallops were harvested systematically during the authorised fishing season for the purpose of investigating paralytic toxins (PSP-mouse test), amnesic toxins (ASPchemical analysis), and lipophilic toxins (DSP-mouse test). For all shellfish samples that tested positive in the DSP mouse bioassay used for lipophilic toxins detection, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to search for the following lipophilic toxins: okadaic acid, dinophysistoxins, pectenotoxins, azaspiracids, yessotoxins, spirolides, and gymnodimine. In order to investigate the presence of okadaic acid esters (DTX3), alkaline hydrolysis was performed on all...

Interspecific comparison of Cd bloaccumulation in European Pectinidae (Chlamys varia and Pecten maximus) ArchiMer
Metian, M; Warnau, M; Oberhansli, F; Teyssie, J; Bustamante, Paco.
The uptake and loss kinetics of Cd were determined in two species of scallops from the European coasts, the variegated scallop Chlamys varia and the king scallop Pecten maximus, following exposures via seawater, phytoplankton and sediment using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (Cd-109). Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within R maximus tissues....

Monitoring of sea scallops Placopecten magellanicus in bottom seeding trials using video in Miquelon bay, Saint Pierre et Miquelon, France ArchiMer
Robert, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier; Lunven, Michel; Caisey, Xavier; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Le Gall, Erwan; Vasquez, Mickael; Rodriguez, Julien; Detcheverry, Sebastien; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Placopecten magellanicus production in Saint Pierre et Miquelon (NW North Atlantic) has been developed through direct seeding of juveniles on leased areas. However, most of the culture occurs in deep water ranging from 30 to 70 meters, which requires a monitoring by video to facilitate the grow-out and survival evaluation. In August 2008, a submersible leaded structure was connected by a video cable to the surface and observation screen was defined through the video, an altimeter and two lasers. The pictures were recorded on board on hard drive and digital video recorder DVCAM, and data were georeferenced by VIDEONAV software. Analysing the video tapes allows to establish a thematic database on the ground structure, presence or absence of seeded and wild...

Litaker, R. Wayne; Stewart, Thomas N.; Eberhart, Bich-thuy L.; Wekell, John C.; Trainer, Vera L.; Kudela, Raphael M.; Miller, Peter E.; Roberts, Alice; Hertz, Cassandra; Johnson, Tyler A.; Frankfurter, Greg; Smith, G. Jason; Schnetzer, Astrid; Schumacker, Joe; Bastian, Jonnette L.; Odell, Anthony; Gentien, Patrick; Le Gal, Dominique; Hardison, I. Ransom; Tester, Patricia A..
Domoic acid (DA) is a potent toxin produced by bloom-forming phytoplankton in the genus which is responsible for causing amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in humans. ASP symptoms include vomiting. diarrhea, and in more severe cases confusion. loss of memory. disorientation. and even coma or death. This paper describes the development and validation of a rapid. sensitive. enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test kit for detecting DA using a monoclonal antibody. The assay gives equivalent results to those obtained using standard high performance liquid chromatography. fluorenylmetbox-yearbonyl high performance liquid chromatography, or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods. It has a linear range from 1.1-3 ppb and was used successfully to measure DA...

Shellfish viruses ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
Mortalities in a number of commercially important mollusc species have been associated with the detection of viruses belonging to several families. The first description of a virus was in adult eastern oyters, Crassostrea virginica, with the detection of virus particles resembling members of the family Herpesviridae. Subsequently, mass mortalities in French stocks of adult Portuguese oysters, C. angulata, were associated with irido-like virus infection. Other viruses observed in molluscs are described as members of the families Iridoviridae, Papovaviridae and Reoviridae. Little information is available on viral infections that affect molluscs due to primarily to the inadequacy of diagnostic methods that are employed when mass mortality events occur. Most...

The sensorial structures of Spondylus americanus Hermann,1781 (Mollusca: Bivalvia, Spondylidae) BABT
Viana,Marina Gomes; Rocha-Barreira,Cristina de Almeida.
Adult animals of Spondylus americanus were analyzed and specialized sensorial structures, the sensorial papillae and the eyes, were characterized. The sensorial papillae were projections on the edge of the mantle in form of light brown fingers which had function of percepting stimulus coming from the medium. They were constituted by loose conjunctive tissues with longitudinal muscular fibers and externally covered by ciliated cubic epithelium, which presented high amount of melanocytes that gave the coloration of the papillae. The eyes were more complex, being on small stalks histologically similar to the papillae. They exhibited a circular formate and had a metallic blue color. Theses structures were constituted by a corneo epithelium, cornea, lens,...
